So i’ve recently started to develop a minimal pure python Virtual Machine tailored specifically for counterparty. I’m starting this thread to keep note of development and design decisions, and also to get input from the community regarding what should the VM do. FAQ Why not use EVM? Between December 2022 and April 2024, an unplanned natural experiment tested whether alternative demand could transform Bitcoin’s fee market. The Ordinals protocol, followed by BRC-20 tokens and the Runes standard, enabled inscription of arbitrary data onto Bitcoin’s blockchain — effectively creating NFTs and tokens on a network designed for monetary transactions alone.
The results were dramatic. On April 20, 2024 — the day Runes launched coinciding with Bitcoin’s fourth halving — transaction fees reached 75% of miner revenue. Average fees hit $128.45. Daily fee revenue touched $80 million. Individual blocks earned more than 40 BTC, twelve times the 3.125 BTC subsidy. The thesis that blockspace could become “scarce digital real estate” commanding permanent premium appeared vindicated.
The collapse was equally dramatic. Within 24 hours, average fees fell 73% to $34.86. By December 2025, they returned to approximately $0.61 — essentially pre-Ordinals baseline levels. BRC-20 tokens went from 50% of all Bitcoin transactions to single digits within months. Runes crashed from 81.3% transaction share to 1.67% within five months of launch. Daily fee revenue collapsed from $62.4 million to under $250,000 — a 99% decline.
This pattern — explosive speculative growth followed by greater than 90% collapse — has repeated across every inscription-related phenomenon. The structural problem is that inscription demand is retail-driven speculation without institutional anchor. Unlike financial transactions where fees are justified by settlement utility, inscription activity is discretionary and extremely price-sensitive. When fees spike, users wait or abandon inscriptions entirely.
The Ordinals experiment demonstrated that unforeseen demand sources can emerge — a genuine point for optimists. It equally demonstrated that such demand can vanish as quickly as it appeared, providing no foundation for the permanent fee revenue that security requires." -

I tried to sound the alarm about changes that would effect counterparty negatively (disabling vanilla BTC dispenser payments, forcing atomic swaps, removing addrindexrs to replace it with something that relies on a 3rd party component).... but alas I was called an alarmist, a toxic dev, etc.... It gives me no pleasure to see that I was right and see the sad state that counterparty is in.... YAY, we can parse things faster cuz adam fixed "bugs".... yet, we have lower traffic than we have in years, so seems like a shit tradeoff..... faster parsing but lose users and fracture community
